Step Back in Time During a Vintage Baseball Game to be Held in Lackawaxen, PA

Beach Lake, PA - Come one, come all and take a step back in time right here in Lackawaxen.   The National Park Service and the Zane Grey’s West Society cordially invite the public to a nineteenth century baseball exhibition featuring two teams: the Mountain Athletic Club and the Delhi Polecats from Delaware County, NY on Sunday, October 16, 2022. The festivities will begin at 12:00PM at the Veteran’s Memorial Park in Lackawaxen, PA with the singing of the National Anthem by Wallenpaupack High School choral students. Then take a glimpse into the past as the teams play exhibition matches according to the 1825 and 1895 rules of baseball to honor Zane Grey.

Why a vintage baseball game in Lackawaxen? Before author Zane Grey began his famed writing career, he attended the University of Pennsylvania on a baseball scholarship while studying dentistry. Grey’s passion and talent for baseball would lead him to play for the Orange Athletic Club in New Jersey after graduating college. Even though Grey’s minor league baseball career was short lived, it would lead him to write on the topic including TheRed Headed Outfielder, TheShort Stop, and The Young Pitcher.

This free event will be fun for the whole family. Children are encouraged to wear their favorite baseball or softball uniforms to show their team spirit. This will also provide for a fantastic photo opportunity with the vintage baseball teams.

Before the game, stop under the pavilion and support our friends from the Wallenpaupack Area Cheerleading Boosters by grabbing a hotdog, walking taco, or snack to munch on for the duration of the exhibition matches. Patrons are strongly encouraged to bring a lawn chair as seating is not available at the ballfield. Free parking will be located across the street from the ball field at the Lackawaxen Fire Hall located at 774 Route 590, Lackawaxen, PA. Parking for people with disabilities will be located at the Veteran’s Memorial Park lot.

Be sure to stop by and say hello to members of the Zane Grey’s West Society and pick up a free Zane Grey Baseball trading card. The Zane Grey Museum located at 135 Scenic Drive, Lackawaxen will be open for visitation at the conclusion of the game until 4:00PM.
